The becoming of Candl’ and other stories.

I looooove handmade stuff. Loving to make my own products and having a great appreciation towards talented people that spend time, energy, skill on doing handmade products.

As a child I use to love our Handarbeit classes. Anything crafted with my hands, anything involving colors and aesthetics.

Additionally I am at heart a candle lover. Whenever I am home, and oh, I am home so often now, I find pleasure in lightening a candle or two or a series of them. Sometimes, in my wilder years, I’d fall asleep with the candles on and I’d be terrified to find them still burning at 5 am (do not do that!!). Still, I continued burning candles. It gives me peace, puts my mind into a lighter place, enchants my senses, gives me a sense of wellbeing. It’s #relaxing and #calming.

There was one moment when I stopped putting candles on, when my son was born. I knew they contain weird chemicals and that they are a hazard for children. If children inhale the smells and burn release, it can affect their health. So I stopped for 1 year with burning any candle.

Another enlightning moment was when my son started to drink by himself from small glass cups. They used to be mostard glasses or candle glasses from Ikea. They were so plain, but practical. I wondered why the mostard or the Ikea glasses arn’t prettier or more special. My son could drink now from a prettier glass, we could have a collection or at least more joy, if they would be more than just plain glasses. From one thought into the other, I imagined making natural candles myself, that we can burn while our child is healthwise safe. And that I’m going to make them in beautiful receipients. Special ones, unique ones, that can be reused after the burn and will represent a beloved item in the family’s cups or glasses collection.

Then I also thought: why do we need always so much new stuff? All these pots already exist, so many beautiful ones that are looking for a new home, all in vintage stores, kringloop or at the brocante, fleamarket, flohmarkt. I love a good treasure hunt, on all my journeys of life.

All put together, I like making my own candles, out of as much as possible, natural ingredients or ingredients free of chemicals. Main ingredients are produced by European suppliers. (rapeseed wax, eco wick, lots of the reused pots come from EU). I like feeling that we can feed eachother in our larger village.

And so, Candl’ is born out of a desire to combine old and new, keep them alive, relevant and bit handcrafted, within the same timeframe, that of NOW, while reusing and repurposing pretty objects we tend to dismiss.

Safety:
Do not leave the candle burn unattended.

Place the candle on a support (a pretty plate or anything heat resistant). Else it can overheat your furniture and damage it.

Instruct children/ keep away from children. My candles are poured in shapes of objects that normally have a different use. This can be confusing without prior instruction. Make sure children stay away from the hot cups!

Trim the wick of the candle, during or after each burn. It will keep the flame at a decent size and not overheat the pot.

The fragrance used is free of dangerous chemicals. Be still mindful, if the fragrance is too strong for you.
